Introduction

CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) refers to computer software that is used to both design and manufacture products.CAD is the use of computer technology for design and design documentation. Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is the use of software to control machine tools and related ones in the manufacturing of work pieces.


Scope

CAD/CAM applications are used to both design a product and program manufacturing processes, specifically, CNC machining. CAM software uses the models and assemblies created in CAD software to generate tool paths that drive the machines that turn the designs into physical parts. CAD/CAM software is most often used for machining of prototypes and finished parts.

Application

• CAM is used in many schools alongside computer-aided design (CAD) to create objects. • CAM has been considered as a numerical control (NC) programming tool, where in two-dimensional (2-D) or three-dimensional (3-D) models of components generated in CAD . • As with other “Computer-Aided” technologies, CAM provides skilled professionals such as manufacturing engineers, NC programmers, or machinists.
